By the time of the final “Big Three” conference at Potsdam a few months later, only one of the original “Big Three” leaders remained as head of their respective states. US President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office on 12 April 1945 and was succeeded by Vice President Harry S. Truman. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill went to the Potsdam Conference in July but political problems in Parliament forced his return to London where he resigned from office. He was replaced as Prime Minister by Clement Attlee who finished the Potsdam Conference for Great Britain. Churchill was, however, re-elected Prime Minister after several years.
